Bear History Project International

Preserving our Bear History

Mission Statement

To Capture, Define, and Preserve the history of the Bear Sub-Culture for present and future generations.

🐻

Capture

Capture the history of the bear movement, so it’s not lost as community members leave us.

📓

Define

Make sure the definition of the Bear Community matches the diversity of its members — specifically: including: non-North-American, non-Anglo-Saxon (English-speaking) members of beardom.

🏆

Event Planning

Both adding to knowledge of the early days, and highlight new effort to follow the arc from circa 2000 to today—continuities and ruptures, diversifying and splintering.

Facebook Group

Our main activity takes place in our Facebook group, currently. There are two basic membership questions when you ask to join. I’ll follow up with a Facebook message if you don’t answer the questions. (Some people, especially on a mobile device, aren’t asked the questions: (1) Why do you want to join, and (2) do you agree to our basic rules of etiquette.)

Les Wright founded the original Bear History Project in 1995. Les collected documentation of the emergent bear culture of the 1980s and early 1990s. The original materials have been permanently archived in the Human Sexuality Collection at Cornell University. (Future holdings will be at the Leather Archives & Museum.)
